Rochester 200k Ride Report

April 16th 2011

It was cold, it was windy, but it was better then being at home and vacuuming!!

Which was my choice if I had elected to say home.  It started cold and didn’t appreciably warm up any during the day.

What little it did was whipped away by the wind chill.  Twelve intrepid riders elected to not vacuum Saturday, nine succeeded in staying away all day and completing the longest 200 brevet ever.  OK an exaggeration on that one.

We started off from Wal-Mart and had to ride on intermittent slush/ice until we were about a mile South of Byron or about 13 miles into the course.  After that all evidence of frozen water on the road way disappeared.  We then were greeted with tail winds to Chatfield about 50 miles into the course.

From Chatfield to Wykoff at the turn around the winds gave us an indication of what most of the return was going to be like, not pleasant was my interpretation.  The Wykoff to Chatfield was a mix of head/side, and tail wind, but not a whole lot of fun regardless.

At this point the times were not too bad.  Four hours to get to Wykoff and an hour to get back to Chatfield, but now the real hard part of the day was to begin.  Pretty much no let up from the headwinds all the way back.  It was a near 6 hour return on the second half of the course.  The only redeeming factor in the winds were that with the wind-chill we didn’t have to take any layers off as it warmed from 30 degrees to 36 degrees in the afternoon.
